The past few days of rainfall have resulted in significant runoff into the Brazos River in the Abilene area upstream of Possum Kingdom Lake. As a result, the Brazos River Authority opened one gate at Possum Kingdom Lake's Morris Sheppard Dam on May 13 at about 8 p.m. to pass this water downstream. Water from this gate opening will arrive in the Horseshoe Bend area early on Sunday. The gate is expected to remain open throughout the weekend and possibly longer as rainfall is forecast for the next week.
Those living on the river should be prepared for rising water conditions. Increased inflow could cause additional gates to be opened. If you are concerned about flooding or the potential for evacuations, please contact your county or local sheriff’s offices.
