Here’s a way to save water and what's in your wallet!

If you’ve been thinking of replacing a big appliance, this could be a good opportunity to save money while helping the environment.  The best part is that there’s time to plan ahead and do some online shopping before the big money-saving holiday.

Certain water-efficient and water-conserving products will be tax-free beginning Tuesday, May 23, through Thursday, May 25, which is Memorial Day. It’s time to start researching products and options available for you and your family or business before the holiday sneaks up on us.

A little water conservation done by each of us goes a long way to ensuring we have enough water in times of drought and for years to come.  And, there is no limit on the number of qualifying items you can buy during the Water-Efficient Products Sales Tax Holiday.

Appliances with a WaterSense label or logo meet the EPA’s specifications for water efficiency and performance, and these products can be purchased tax-free for either personal or business purposes, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. These include showerheads, bathroom sink faucets and accessories, toilets, urinals and landscape irrigation controls.

Residential water use is often the largest single demand sector for a water utility, according to the Alliance for Water Efficiency. Installing water-efficient fixtures and appliances around the home can produce significant water savings. Learn more about how here.

Homeowners are also eligible to purchase additional tax-free items that help reduce water use. The items can be used or planted for conserving or retaining groundwater;
recharging water tables, or decreasing ambient air temperature, and so limiting water evaporation.

Some of the items that qualify include:

•    a soaker or drip-irrigation hose
•    a moisture control for a sprinkler or irrigation system
•    mulch, soil and compost
•    a rain barrel
•    a permeable ground cover surface that allows water to reach underground basins
•    plants, trees and grasses
•    water-saving surfactants

Projections show that by 2060, the Brazos River basin will not have enough water to meet the growing population. Conserving water now will help provide for everyone’s future.

Meanwhile, certain air conditioners and ceiling fans can be bought tax-free as part of the Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday, which is also during Memorial Day weekend.
