Life jackets for Hood County

JohnRiley8

Hood County children are a little safer this summer as families took the time Saturday to pick up free kids' life jackets from the Brazos River Authority Water Safety Day at Lake Granbury.

The drive-thru event allowed parents to safely secure new life jackets along with fun, educational goodies, and great water safety information from the Remembering Wyatt Dale Water Safety organization. Even more people were helped due to the generosity of Hood County residents who donated their time this weekend to give blood.

More than 60 children's life jackets were distributed at the BRA Lake Granbury office. There are a few life jackets remaining after the event. Secure one by calling the BRA Lake Granbury office at 4552 Mambrino Highway at (817) 573-3212 while supplies last. Sizing for youngsters depends on weight and not chest size, as it does with adults.

Sizing of a life jacket is important for a child. A life jacket that is too big will go over a child's head when they jump in the water. A life jacket that is too small might not hold a child up. And since every day, about 10 people die from unintentional drowning, safety measures are critical, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger.  Use the QR scan at the right to learn how to properly fit your child.

Drowning is quick and it is silent. Help keep those around you safe this summer, and all year, when around any body of water by making sure a life jacket is worn.

Enjoy the Brazos River and BRA reservoirs, but always keep safety in mind. Safe doesn't mean less fun.
