Drawing for BRA waterfowl hunting locations scheduled for August

Drawing for BRA waterfowl hunting locations scheduled for August

The Brazos River Authority has set the 2023 dates for its annual drawings for designated waterfowl hunting blind locations on its three reservoirs.

BRA employees will host the lottery-style drawings at each of its three lakes: Possum Kingdom Lake, in Palo Pinto County, Lake Granbury, an hour southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth in Hood County; and Lake Limestone, located on the upper Navasota River.

Hunting on BRA reservoirs is only permitted during waterfowl season and only at designated blind locations.

Hunters must be at least 18 years old, have a valid 2023-2024 Texas hunting license, and the license must have the Texas Duck Stamp Endorsement and the current federal Waterfowl Stamp. One entry is allowed per person. The $200 permit fee is due at the time of the drawing for those selected.

Although the exact number of blind locations will not be known until closer to the draw date, each lake is reporting what they have at this time. Possum Kingdom Lake has 30 locations available. Lake Granbury has 14 blind sites available. Lake Limestone has approximately 29 locations available.

Prior to the drawing, each location is reviewed to ensure it’s still accessible by water and no new houses or structures have been built nearby. Since each lake is a water supply reservoir, the lake level will also be a factor in the number of spots available.

According to Lake Granbury Reservoir Manager Connie Tucker, drawings usually take 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

“During the selection process, we update those still waiting with the location of the blinds that have been chosen, as some people prefer specific areas of the lake. We also draw two alternates in case one of the drawn people changes their mind,” Tucker added.

Hunters are responsible for providing their own blind. Four hunters may share a designated blind area. If fewer entries are received than the number of available sites, the remaining sites will be available on a first-come/first-served basis.
