One gate open at Possum Kingdom Lake

Possum Kingdom Lake's Morris Sheppard Dam has one gate open for a total release of about 9,600 cfs. Be alert for rising water conditions in the Brazos River.

Inflows into PK continue to rise due to runoff generated in the watershed upstream late last week.  Assuming no additional rainfall in the local watershed around PK, it is estimated that the gate will remain open through the early morning of Friday, July 7, 2023. At this time, another gate opening is not anticipated, but an additional gate will be unlocked and in the floating position as a precaution.

The time it takes for water released from a single gate to travel downstream from Morris Sheppard Dam to DeCordova Bend Dam at Lake Granbury is around two days. The water released from the gate at PK will take around 35 to 44 hours to travel downstream to the USGS gage near Dennis, which is about seven hours upstream of Lake Granbury.

Additionally, it is likely a tainter gate release will be needed at DeCordova Bend Dam later this week as Lake Granbury’s elevation will rise toward its operational full range of 692.5 to 692.7 ft-msl and the water released from PK will need to be passed downstream.
